| This compact disc, released in 2003, is a collection of 17 songs related to the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804-06. It was produced as a close collaboration between Cathy Barton and Dave Para, Paul and Win Grace, and Bob Dyer who bill themselves on this recording as the Discovery String Band. The songs and tunes are a combination of traditional music from the time of Lewis and Clark as well as a number of original songs written by Cathy Barton, Bob Dyer and Dave Para, many of which use traditional tunes as their musical base.
James Denny, a prominent Lewis and Clark historian with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, describes the recording as an "eloquent tribute to and evocation of the Lewis and Clark expedition and its immortal actors." He also says that "the liner notes…reveal the range and depth of research these musicians have brought to the traditional music of Lewis and Clark era, and reveal the richness and poetry of the songs they have composed for this album. To these impressive achievements must be added the sheer beauty of the arrangements and musicianship these artists have brought to this undertaking…. As you listen to this album, you may well find that you have taken an extraordinary musical journey of discovery of your own."
